My September Birchbox

September 30, 2015

Firstly an Official Happy 5th Birthday to Birchbox! They are celebrating their 5th Birthday with this amazing box of american products, some already known to me and some new.

The most exciting thing this month is that all subscribers have been entered in for the chance to win a trip to New York! How exciting! I’ve also sent 3 referrals for another 3 entries for the comp. The more chances the better. Ive never been to the big apple, so this would be a great one to win.

Birchbox have put together a selection of products  which are all from american brands, (as Birchbox started in America). I know my review is a bit late, ( sorry!) but better late then never.

My favourite of the bunch has to be the Beauty Protector Body Cleanser. It just smells amazing! If you have used any of their other hair products you would know what smell I am talking about. It smells sweet and heavenly. Birchbox have sent these in previous boxes: the hair oil, shampoo and leave in conditioners. They all have the same smells and its just so lush. I love it. The cleanser it self lathered up very well and left the bathroom fragranced for hours. It was not drying, considering how perfumed it is. I would definitely buy this product.

Benefits The POREfessional License to Blot was a product I was interested in for a while, so was happy to receive this. I do tend to get an oily t-zone through out the day, so this cute sample has been great to pop out my bag and ‘blot’ on the go. I didn't read much into it, as any oil blotter is a must try for me, so I wasn't expecting a balm blotter ( silly me) which  was a surprise. It felt weird using it, but was quite surprised on the instant oil free finish. However if you have left the oil to build up for a while, I feel that your foundation is moved around on the skin, so your make up can start to look uneven. To achieve the perfect blot, you do need to play around with it, but is worth it once you know how to use it. It can also be a little unhygienic, so may need a little clean before each use.

My Skin care routine is important and I have been exfoliating with an acid tone for a few months now.  The thought of using particles to exfoliate has been off putting as some particles can feel quite harsh, but the Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Face Polish was not too bad. It is a creamy product with fine particles, which hasn't felt too abrasive. It smells of Apricots and has left my skin feeling quite smooth and hydrated. Especially with the cooler breeze and winter coming, sometimes an acid tone just doesn't feel enough, so I think I will use this only weekly and very gently!

John Masters Organics Detangler smelt lush! It was citrusy and VERY creamy. With my first use I made the mistake of using too much , so I ended up with sticky hair. The second time round I used a smaller amount, but I felt it made my hair weighted and took a long time to try out. As I have thick hair I prefer to use lighter products in my hair to avoid the weight and keep my hair fresher for longer. ( I find creamier products make my hair oily, quicker). This can also be used as a wash away product, which might have been ideal for me.

I have really thick hair, so I felt that the small bristles on the Birchbrush didn't really work for me! It just felt like I was stroking my hair but with no effect. I prefer to use wide tooth combs. Cant really add anymore to this.

The worse thing is getting a shade of something that will not suite you and that was the case with the Laqa & Co Cosmetics Cheeky Lip Pencil. I received shade Cray Cray which is a sort of Orange Pink, but it did not suit me at all. It is a creamy matte textured pencil so picks up the dry skin ( the worse for the changing weather). It also doesn't last very long. An all round no no for me.

I only enjoyed using a few products, some where not amazing for me and some I loved. There have been many mixed reviews of the box itself, but I find that discovering and using a new product each month is what the box is about and not receiving products you want or will definitely enjoy each month. Although that would be nice :-)

What was your favourite item of this month? Did you get to pop down to Selfridges London to make your own Birchbox?

For Octobers box, subscribers have been able to choose what box we want.  There is a choice of Stylist Guest Editor or Back to Basics. I have made my selection and Look forward to the next box!
